Hunts Help Heros - 13 Nov 2008

On Friday 14th November at Cheltenham Countryside Race Day the Masters of Foxhounds Association are to present a cheque for £76,000 to Help for Heroes. This money has been raised throughout this year by hunts across the country for this wonderful cause that supports and rehabilitates service men and women injured in today`s current conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. The cheque will be received by Mrs Sophie Butler on behalf of Help for Heroes and representing the Armed Forces will be Brigadier Christopher Parker OBE, the Commandant of the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine. Brigadier Parker is responsible for the military units at the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine, to which battle casualties are evacuated from Iraq and Afghanistan. He is also responsible for the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre at Headley Court where many of the most serious casualties undergo rehabilitation after hospital treatment. Brigadier Parker said: " We are very pleased to be here representing Her Majesty's Armed Forces and the beneficiaries of such a generous donation. We are also very grateful for the continuing public support to such a worthy cause as Help for Heroes." The Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) at Headley Court has a unique national capability which has it origins in post World War 2 charitable facilities for injured aircrew. It now performs a vital role in supporting injured service personnel from all 3 Services. The DMRC is a tri-service military unit which specialises in the rehabilitation of military patients with complex trauma, brain and spinal injury as well as a wide range of muscular-skeletal conditions. The patients receive intensive and comprehensive residential rehabilitation programmes which support them in reclaiming function, mobility and independence. The majority of patients treated at Headley Court are able to regain the fitness levels allowing them to resume military service. Bryn Parry the Co founder and CEO of Help for Heroes says “This is a wonderful contribution to Help for Heroes and we are very grateful for all the work that has gone into raising this amount. We are using the money we raise to directly support our servicemen and women with enhanced facilities and services. We are helping to fund a wonderful new swimming pool and gym complex at Headley Court, as well as many other projects to help our boys and girls get better.’’
